Import and export of electrocardiographs in the USA, China and Japan in 2012

1. USA

In 2012 the volume of import of the U.S. under the code 901811 (electrocardiographs, parts and accessories) from 37 countries amounted to US$162mln. Half of this amount (US$88,8mln) is accounted for by Canada. The second and the third places are occupied by China (US$11,6mln) and Japan (US$10,3mln). The large volume of import from Canada can be explained by the purchases of the spare parts in Canada as well as by the special trade relationship between Canada and the U.S. In this case Canada is a convenient transit country through which the customers from the U.S. are buying electrocardiographs from different countries of the world.

Below is the graphical representation of TOP 10 countries from which the U.S.A. bought electrocardiographs in 2012..

The USA exported its cardiographs under the code 901811(electrocardiographs, parts and accessories) to 123 countries for the amount of US$166mln.

The rating of the countries – importers of electrocardiographs from the USA is the following:

  • 1. Canada ($27,8 mln)
  • 2. Germany ($25 mln)
  • 3. Singapore ($12,7 mln.)
  • 4. Japan ($12,5 mln)
  • 5. Brazil ($7,5 mln)
  • 6. China ($7,2 mln)
  • 7. India ($7,1 mln)

The stated data show that the volumes of import and export of electrocardiographs are almost the same. As in case of the import, the first place of Canada, although by a small margin from the second place, can be also explained by transit. It is expected that the second place of Germany is explained by the fact that a significant portion of cardiographs purchased by the German companies is shipped to the other countries, for example to Russia. Thus, according to the Russian customs statistics, in 2012 Russia bought electrocardiographs produced in the USA for the amount of US$4.1mln, though it turns out from the U.S. customs statistics that the volume of supplies of the U.S. electrocardiographs to Russia amounted to US$1.3mln. Consequently, most of supplies of electrocardiographs made in the U.S. comes to Russia through the third countries..

The following manufacturers supply their cardiographs from the USA to Russia:: Mortara Instrumenrs Inc., Philips Medical Systems, GE Medical System Information Technologies, Inc. и Welch Allyn Inc.. The leading supplier is the firm Mortara..

It should be noted the regularity of supplies which differs from the dynamics of purchases of cardiographs in our country. Thus, nearly half (US$12.2mln) of the volume of the Russian import of US$25.4mln in 2012 is accounted for the forth quarter. The Soviet “rush work” continues to live and flourish in Russia..

Below are the charts of the export and import of the U.S. electrocardiographs under the code 9018113000 (electrocardiographs). The total export and import volumes accounted US$43.5mln and US$20.2mln correspondingly..

2. The export of the Chinese electrocardiographs in 2012.

В 2012 г. The manufacturers of the PRC exported 46645 pcs of electrocardiographs under the code HS 90181100 to more than 100 countries in the world for the amount of US$26.8mln. The growth of the export volume compared with the previous year was 15%. In the analysis of the Chinese customs statistics only the transactions General Trade in the price range of US$180-2500 were taken into account. The lower value of this price range was chosen to exclude the consumption materials (electrodes, patient cables, etc.) from the analysis. The upper value cut off the cardio equipment that has no relation to 1/3/6/12-channel cardiographs. It should be noted that the introduction of the lower range does not significantly affect the results of the analysis, however the upper range affects the results of the calculations significantly. That is, we thought that the Chinese companies do not produce the electrocardiographs in the price range above US$2500..

The rating of the countries – importers of the Chinese cardiographs is given below:

  • 1. Hong Kong - $4,9 mln
  • 2. Japan – $4,7 mln
  • 3. India– $3,5 mln.
  • 4. USA – $2 mln
  • 5. Russia – $1,98 mln

As in the case with Canada in the analysis of the U.S. customs statistics, it can be supposed that Hong Kong is a transit country through which the Chinese manufacturers export their cardiographs to the third countries. The main manufacturer – exporter of cardiographs to Japan is the company Beijing Fukuda Denshi Medical Instruments Co., Ltd. (Fukuda). Fukuda is exporting the largest part of its Chinese cardiographs to Russia, Japan and France.

In comparison with the previous year the volume of supplies from China to India, Japan and Russia increased. The export volume to Russia increased nearly twice that can be explained by the growth of the direct supplies of cardiographs to Russia bypassing the third countries. On the whole, the volume of the Russian import of the Chinese cardiographs and the volume of the export of the Chinese cardiographs to Russia are about the same.

The rating of the Chinese anufacturers is the following:

  • 1. Edan Instruments Inc. (Edan)
  • 2. Beijing Fukuda Denshi Medical Instruments Co., Ltd. (Fukuda)
  • 3. Shenzhen Biocare Electronics Co., Ltd. (Biocare)
  • 4. Contec Medical Systems Co., Ltd. (Contec)
  • 5. Shanghai Optical Medical Electronic Instrument (Nihon Koden, China)

The TOP 5 Chinese manufacturers export about 70% of the total export volume of the Chinese electrocardiographs. In comparison with the previous year, the export volume of Edan decreased a little, but the export volumes of Fukuda and Biocare grew.

3. The export and the import of electrocardiographs in Japan

According to Minfin statistics data, the volume of the Japanese export of electrocardiographs under the code 9018.11-000 in 79 countries accounted to $27,6mln. The rating of the countries-importers of the Japanese electrocardiographs looks like this:

  • 1. China ($9,2 mln)
  • 2. USA ($6,1 mln)
  • 3. Germany ($2,3 mln)
  • 4. Russia ($1,7 mln)
  • 5. Tailand ($0,8 mln)

The first four countries account for 70% of the Japanese export of cardiographs. Japan imported electrocardiographs from 17 countries for the amount of US$25,9mln on CIF basis. The main countries-importers of cardiographs to Japan are the following:

  • 1. USA ($10,7 mln)
  • 2. China ($4,9 mln)
  • 3. Canada ($4,5 mln.)
  • 4. Malaysia ($2,5 mln)
  • 5. Austria ($1,3 mln)

The divergence between the volume of the Japanese import from China and the Chinese export to Japan makes US$12mln which can be explained by the Japanese import of a part of the Chinese cardiographs through the third countries. Fukuda cardiographs account for 73% of the total Chinese export of electrocardiographs to Japan. Total 15 Chinese companies supplied the cardiographs from China to Japan. This is mainly the Chinese trading companies.

Even more is the divergence between the Russian import of the Japanese cardiographs ( according to the data of the Russian customs statistics) and the Japanese export to Russia (according to the Japanese statistics). This divergence makes US$ 2mln. that is known to be explained by the fact that the largest part of the Japanese electrocardiographs is delivered to Russia through the third countries. The third place of Canada in this rating can be explained by the fact that Canada is a transit country.
